After Google Panda: The New Definition of Search Engine Optimization

Six months ago, Google ran an update to their search engine algorithm - a ranking filter known as Google Panda. The Panda filter was meant to make search engine ranking more helpful for users and prevent low-quality sites from appearing before more legitimate ones. However, for SEO marketers who had been using Google's original ranking algorithm to create successful webpages, Google Panda meant that many of the sites that were specifically tailored to Google's system of analyzing websites were now falling in the rankings.

With one update to their algorithm, the search engine optimization game changed forever.

Should you fear the Panda?

At Foster Web Marketing, we don't fear the Panda. We understand that Google's algorithm will continue to change in the future, and their search engine - and all search engines - will always center on finding websites with the most accurate, best written, and most relevant content. While some SEO and online marketing companies are rushing to figure out exactly how the Panda works and exactly how to beat the Panda, we don't believe understanding how search engines work is as important as getting great ranking or getting more business.

Here's what we think is at the heart of great SEO:

  • Well-written, original, and relevant content

  • Regular website updates that keep your page fresh and relevant

  • Unique information and propositions that engage readers and separate you from other websites

  • Articles, videos, and other information that keeps users on the site

  • A diverse range of readers who visit your page from different sources

The bottom line? After the Panda update, SEO is much more about user experience and readability and less about old search engine strategies like keywords. Optimizing your website in today's world may be as easy as thinking about what your prospective reader wants and needs.
