Things are changing. Social media is becoming a norm within our society. Just take a look at a recent charity event, as an example.
Over 150 celebrities have signed up on eBay.com as part of the TwitChange event. Basically, it’s a charity auction to raise funds for a nonprofit organization, A Home in Haiti. People can go on eBay and place their bids to have celebrities follow them on Twitter. Bidders also have the option of celebrities retweeting the bidders’ messages or being mentioned by name. For the overzealous bidders, they can choose all three options (for a price, of course).
Why are people so enthralled with the idea of aligning themselves on Twitter with stars, such as MC Hammer, Eva Longoria Parker and Shaquille O’Neil? It’s all about exposure and being recognized by the public. Maybe it even has a little to do with bragging rights – “Guess what? Paula Abdul mentioned me on Twitter!”
Anyway, this charity event just goes to show how relevant Twitter and other social media sites are to our society. As an attorney or other business professional, you have two options. You can choose to ignore social media, thinking it is another fad that will go away. Or, you can jump on this marketing opportunity to explode your practice. It is really up to you.
