Networking has gone high tech. Mixers and other in person networking events aren’t the only ways to get your name out there. Now, social media websites, including LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook, allow you to professionally network on a broader scale. Plus, you can network from the comfort of your office (or home)!
Whatever you post or comment about on social networking websites should be personalized. Having “canned” comments or postings that only appear automated isn’t the best approach. You need to show that you have something valuable to say and that you know what you’re talking about. Your interactions on such sites as Twitter and Facebook should show your personality. People need to get to know you and they will be quickly turned off if they feel that you are copying and pasting messages to them.
It is easy to forget that some of the same manners and courtesies that you would use offline should be implemented on social networking sites. For example, if someone re-tweets your post or answers a question, a simple “thank you,” can go a long way.
