What Will Happen to the Long Tail Keyword Now That Google Instant is on the Scene?

Now that Google Instant has been unvieled, many people are left wondering its impact on long tail keywords

In our news article, Google to Predict Your Searches, we talked in depth about how this search engine enhancement works.  Basically, Google will populate the search engine results page as you type.  For example, typing in “Dallas pers” will generate a list of Dallas personal injury lawyers.

As you type in each letter of your search term, Google will modify the search results.  The purpose is to cut the time it takes to search and select a link.  According to Google, this feature will save 2 to 5 seconds per search.

One of the questions that has arisen since the launch of Google Instant is – how will it impact the long tail keyword?  The long tail keyword is that search phrase that contains multiple words and is highly targeted.  To date, many Internet marketers have been successful when focusing on the long tail.  Those types of keywords have been known to have a great conversion rate.  The dilemma is that people will no longer have to type in such a long search phrase to find information, which means fewer long tail keywords searches.

This shift in Google’s search engine means that you have to also focus on the first few words of your search terms, such as “Florida workers’ comp” (original long tail keyword - “Florida workers’ comp claim denials”).  However, you should still include long tail keywords in your content, as the quality of traffic generated from those search terms could be even stronger now.
