When It Comes to Search Engines, There’s More than Just Google

These days, the word “Google” is synonymous with search engine. In fact, it’s common today to hear Google used as a verb. However, even though Google is certainly the behemoth in the search engine industry, it is important to understand that there are other players on the field – and that millions of people use search engines other than Google every day. While some of the search engines are similar to Google, others are less traditional. Let’s take a closer look:

  • Bing. Launched by Microsoft in 2009, this web search engine may well be Google’s biggest competition to date.
  • Yahoo! Search. Begun as a website directory in the early stages of the internet, this search engine sees a significant number of queries each day.
  • YouTube. You may not think of this video website as a search engine, but millions of people search for web videos each day – and the numbers are only growing.
  • Ask. Founded in 1996, Ask.com is a question-and-answer based search engine that stresses everyday language and user-generated content.
  • AOL Search. Even though it is number five on the list, this search engine still gets 33 million unique visitors each month.

What does this information mean for lawyer search engine marketing? Google is not the be-all and end-all when it comes to search engine optimization – and the field is always growing and changing. Optimizing your attorney website for Google but ignoring other search engine trends is simply not the best way to plan for the future. Change is the only constant, and your attorney website should be ready for it.
