Aside from keeping teenagers from actually doing any work, is there anything Twitter, Facebook and MySpace are good for?

In a word, yes.

It goes without saying that your primary concern as an attorney is to get clients. It isn’t to make friends or to keep up with your old high school and college friends. Your intention is to secure clients and win as many cases as you can. And while the main function of these sites is social networking, there is nothing stopping you from starting pages on these networks and filling them with useful information.

Despite a difference in appearance, these social networks all pretty much work the same way. You have a page that you can dedicate entirely to yourself. You can put up pictures, upload videos, create links to other websites (your own, for instance,) and fill the site with as much information as you want. On MySpace you are given the option to put an audio track that plays every time someone comes to your page. If you have had a radio ad created for you, why not simply place it on your site? Or make a new one? It is much cheaper than actually paying for radio time, which could ultimately end up saving you real money.

You could also put articles that you have written or news links to any judgments or successful cases that you might win on either MySpace or Facebook. In short, there is very little that you can’t do on the site.

Twitter can also be used to your advantage as a practicing attorney. What Twitter actually does is alert anyone who is interested (friends, family, clients, etc.) as to what it is that you are doing. If you want people to know that you are accepting cases, you can let them know instantly. If you want people to know that you are in court, you can let them know instantly. If you want people to know that you just won a judgment for a client, you can let them know instantly. The only thing keeping you from using Twitter as a marketing device is really the limits of your own imagination.

If you are wondering what the advantages are, one that is particularly obvious is search engine placement. As an experiment, pick the name of someone you know or used to know at random. Let’s say the person that you went to the prom with in high school. Type in his or her name in Google, and then see what shows up. Odds are that one of the first things to show will be his or her MySpace page, a Facebook page, or a Wikipedia page. If the name of the person you went to high school with has a fairly common name, it will probably be someone completely unrelated to your old flame, but the point is that since these social networks are so popular, the individual pages have a tendency to rank very high on Google, Yahoo, MSN or any other search engine that you can think of.

The internet should be the primary marketing strategy of any business out there. And while your main marketing platform should be your website, taking advantage of these other free social networking services can add new dimensions to your presence on the web. As long as there are free social networking sites, your company or firm should have a page on each of them. Not taking advantage of them won’t exactly hurt, but it won’t help either.

At Foster Web Marketing, we not only handle your entire primary website needs (including site design, web hosting and content development,) but we also will create and handle pages on any of the social networking sites for you.
