It seems that America has gone list crazy as of late. To be sure, we have always had an affinity for categorizing and rankings. Music is ranked in terms of the top 10, top 50 or top 200, while sports teams live and die by where they are in the standings.
But lately it seems that the need to quantify and rank has hit every single conceivable category. You can find sites that involve the “Top Ten Scientific Discoveries,” or the “Top Ten Bass Players,” or the “Top Ten Relief Pitchers,” or the “Top Ten Comic Book Villains.” These pages permeate the internet, and many of them achieve the level of popularity that is known as “viral.”
So is there any way that you could take advantage of this popular compulsion to list?
Of course there is.
As a personal injury attorney, it is your job to attempt to help rectify, in some small way, man’s inhumanity to man. On a daily basis you try to help people who have been injured in ways that have completely altered or even ruined their lives, and the reason that your services are required is because the person or persons responsible for the injuries are refusing to accept their responsibilities. Or another possible scenario is that the insurance companies that represent the people responsible are also refusing to accept their responsibilities.
You deal with car insurance companies that consider paying for medical bills a personal insult, doctors who commit medical malpractice and surgical errors, property owners who neglected to do necessary maintenance, and manufacturers who make faulty and dangerous products. There should be no shortage of companies, experiences or types of injuries that can be ranked and categorized.
Here are a few ideas to get you started:
Worst Insurance Companies: This is a category that has dozens of subcategories. Companies could be ranked based on the percentages of payouts to injury victims, customer service, or the amount of time that it takes to receive a payment or settlement. If the rules of your settlements don’t prohibit the discussion of the case, you could rank your own personal experiences in how hard an insurance company will fight. Conversely, you could also rank the insurance companies that offer the best in customer service, insurance companies that are fair in offering settlements, or insurance companies that have the fastest response times.
Most/Least Safe Cars: This is the sort of information that can be found at the Insurance Institute, Car and Driver, or any number of sites. You can also do ranks on things like mileage, which would seem to be mundane but are in fact the sort of thing that thousands of people look for on Google every day.
Biggest Product Recalls: If your specialty happens to be product liability, listing some of the more notorious product liability cases would be a good place to start. Writing a summary of the Dalkon Shield, the Tylenol recall of the 80’s, or Sony’s battery laptop can draw traffic to your site based on people who happen to have an interest in the topic.
Most Dangerous Intersections: States, counties and cities all keep accident records, and quite often it seems that accidents happen in the same locations. Making a list of the intersections in your area where the most accidents happen is not only useful to people in your area, but it is also the sort of information that generates traffic.
These are only a few suggestions. If you stop to consider the various ways in which your firm serves its clients, many more ideas for lists are sure to come to mind.
Bear in mind that for every real and practical search that occurs on Google or any other search engines, there are dozens more that are based on the equivalent of bar room bets or idle curiosities. This might be the reason that lists seem to be so popular these days. But if someone types in “least safe cars” or “dangerous intersections in your town,” it would be to the benefit of your site if it showed up in the returns. It will benefit your site even if the searcher doesn’t go to your site.
