Don't Ignore the Lesser Search Engines

Have you noticed that most people have pretty specific tastes? Some people drink nothing but Coca-Cola while others prefer Pepsi. Some people won’t drive anything but Ford cars and trucks while others won’t drive anything but Chevrolet’s.

But there are those other folks that prefer Royal Crown Cola (RC to me and you.) And there are also those folks that scoff at the idea of being behind the wheel of either Ford’s or Chevy’s and won’t buy anything but a Dodge.

To be sure, these people might be a minority, but they are enough to keep Royal Crown cola a money making business. And last time I checked, Chrysler was still in operation. And while I’m sure these companies would be more than happy to occupy the market share of Coca Cola, Pepsi or General Motors, they have managed to carve out a profitable niche for themselves by creating brand familiarity and preference amongst a customer base that comes back again and again.

You know who else has done that? Dogpile, MSN, Ask, and Yahoo.

As a company that specializes in SEO, we here at Foster Web Marketing recognize as well as anyone the importance of getting a good ranking on Google. After all, Google absolutely dominates the market when it comes to search engine queries. Back in July, Google had an incredible 61.9% of the market share of search engine use. It’s closest competitor was Yahoo, which had 20.5%, and after that it was Microsoft, AOL, and Ask.

The point of all this is that there are plenty of people out there who use the lesser known search engines for a variety of reasons. Maybe they just use it out of habit, or maybe they like the way it looks, or maybe they tried Google and didn’t like it for whatever reason. But at the end of the day, there are still millions of people that use the less popular search engines, and some of them will need legal help at some point.

At Foster Web Marketing, our primary focus is Google, but we don’t discount the other search engines either. Yahoo and MSN are also part of our marketing plan. Traffic is traffic is traffic when it comes to getting users to our clients sites, and it doesn’t matter to us (nor should it matter to you) where they come from. Being indexed on MSN, Yahoo or Ask is just another way to bring potential clients to your site.

There is also the “just in case” scenario to think about. Have you ever gone to a restaurant or bar and ordered your brand of beer only to find out that they don’t have it or have run out? You just order the next one on the list, or order one that is similar to what you like. Sure, you would rather have the brand that you like, but at this point beggars can’t be choosers. Believe it or not, there are occasions where Google goes down for a few minutes. A few minutes might not seem like a lot until you consider that at any given second there are millions of people typing in queries on Google. If they can’t get to it for whatever reason, they will go to Yahoo, MSN, AOL, or whichever search engine that occurs to them. Wouldn’t you want to be in a position to take advantage of that?

So although Yahoo, MSN, AOL and other search engines aren’t as sexy as Google, there is really no reason to scoff at a high ranking on any of these pages. If you are actively taking an interest in the site ranking of your page, then pay just as much attention to the other search engines. If you are hiring an SEO firm to handle these things for you, then make sure that they are taking the lesser listings seriously.
