In the world of Web marketing, each day is different. What might have worked yesterday, might not be effective today. We are constantly making changes to stay up with Google and the other major search engines, which is what has prompted our latest move.
Before we go into the change we have made (it's big, but it is one that needed to be made), it is important to take a step back and discuss linking.
Understanding Links
There are certain techniques that are used to boost rankings within search results. While content always was and will continue to be one of the most important factors considered, links have been more of a fluctuating variable. Links refer to both internal links (the links within your own website) and external links (links to your website from other sites). The search engines do put a certain amount of emphasis on links, which help them identify sites that are "popular" or appear to be experts.
For years, we have used our existing Foster Web Marketing group of websites to help you get links pointing to your site. Google and other search engines used to reward these links and they were therefore valuable. Things have changed. With the search engine's continuous algorithm updates, these types of links are no longer helpful. Instead, links need to come from websites that are either local to your firm or have some type of relation to the services provided.
Links ideally should come from non-profit organizations, government entities, industry specific companies or local businesses. Paid legal directories, such as Nolo, are still okay.
Drum Roll, Please...
We have officially done away with the links that were automatically on your Resources page. The focus will now be on adding more relevant, local links to this page.
The links that had appeared on the Resources page, have not harmed your website, by any means. However, as Google and the other search engines focus on more organic, natural links, it is time we do so as well. There could be more changes to come that would make this technique something that Google and other search engines frown upon.
With all of that being said, it is important that you take the time to find useful resources that you can include on your website. Think about your target market and what would be most helpful to them. Once you find some websites, simply log into DSS and add them under the "Resources | Link" tab on the left sidebar.
