If You Misuse Social Media, You Can Blow It Completely

A recent article in the Wall Street Journal shows you just how big of an impact social media has on business. According to the article, “Business Schools Tackle Social Media,” some schools have started offering courses geared toward business and social media. These professors understand that social media is “fundamentally changing the business world.”

Below are some interesting points brought up in the article:

  1. Social media allows you to focus on your target market. Reaching the right people at the right time is the goal of any marketer. As an attorney, you need to adopt the same mentality. Your mission is to get in front of the types of clients you want to work with. If you are able to do so, you will experience a major payoff.
  2. You can use social media to identify how your prospects think. Social media has presented a unique opportunity. Businesses have been able to listen to their prospects. That means you can learn about your prospects’ interests and what topics are important to them.
  3. Social media can have negative effects on your business, if not used correctly. While social media has tremendous advantages, if you do not approach this marketing method appropriately, you could hurt your business. You need to put careful thought into what you communicate on sites, like Facebook and Twitter. According to Sean Meehan, marketing professor at IMD business school in Switzerland, “the marketing playbook is the same playbook it always was, it’s just that there are new tools and they’re very powerful tools in terms of reach. And if you use them well, you will learn more about your served community. But if you misuse it, you can blow it completely.”

Social media is a great attorney Web marketing tool. For information on how to use one of the popular social media sites, Twitter, order a FREE copy of the report, Twitter For Attorneys: A Quick Start Guide.
