The key to success in any field is managing the day to day aspect of operations. Some people refer to them as “the little things,” but when you stop and consider how any business is run, it is often “the little things” that determine whether or not your practice is a success or a failure. In that sense, “the little things” isn’t a very accurate title.
It’s the same thing with search engine optimization. Although big, sweeping changes to your website will make short term differences in the way that Google, Yahoo and others will see your website, maintaining high rankings should be considered a marathon rather as a sprint.
There is no real way for any website to have a consistent monopoly on the first spot on the first page of search engines. That first spot can’t be bought or leased. In order to get there, your site has to meet the ever shifting criteria and algorithms of the various search engines. And if you do get to that first spot, there is no guarantee that you will be able to hold onto it for a month, or a week, or even a day.
But obtaining and maintaining a ranking that stays within the first two pages is basically a matter of doing “the little things.” What that means is updating your sight with content on a regular basis. That means news updates, blogging, pictures and articles. And within that, there are things that you can do that don’t take a lot of work and can make real differences in how the search engines view your site. For instance:
URL Tricks: Many law firms want to separate words in their URL addresses, and that’s fine, but it is never a good idea to use underscores. In other words, if the name of your firm is the Smith, Jones and Clark, have the URL read www.smith-jones-clark.com rather than www.smith_jones_clark.com. This not only attracts the search engine algorithms, but it also has the advantage of being easier to type.
H1 and H3: These are html tags that alter the size of the font on the web page. Writing the headlines of any articles or content in H1 and the subheadlines in H3 is an easy way to attract search engine headlines.
Targeting Keywords in Bold: In the course of the content that you write, use the keywords and keyphrases that are relevant to your practice. Use terms like “injury lawyer,” or “car accident,” on “personal injury attorney.” And at least once you should put these keywords in bold.
These are all just little things that don’t take a lot of time or effort, but they can pay real dividends when it comes to gaining ground on search engine rankings.
And remember, doing so isn’t a pointless exercise. Search engines are the primary tool for practically everyone. The phone book will soon go the way of the dinosaur, and while radio and television ads are effective, they are very costly, and they are only effective over the amount of time that have purchased. With the internet, you can have a high marketing presence for as long as you want for a fraction of the cost.
