How influential is your business on the web and in the legal world? And how good is your web presence at driving action? The comparatively new startup website Klout is attempting to answer those questions by tracking businesses' influence online and helping users learn how to better leverage their power. This week, the company announced that it had officially calculated the Klout Scores of 100 million different voices on the web, ranging from individuals to businesses.
Since its inception two years ago, the social media analytics company has been calculating entities' influence over a number of social networks and guiding users on what to do to direct or increase that influence. While they stress that they do not have 100 million users (only 100 million calculations), they believe that they have taken a step towards better establishing their own web presence.
While many remain unfamiliar with the company, Klout made headlines in the entertainment world this week after penning marketing deals with both comedian Will Ferrell (and his internet video site FunnyOrDie) and horror novelist Stephen King (regarding his new novel Mile 81). How does it work? As an example, King's publisher gave 1,000 "influential" readers free and early access to the writer's new e-book.
It remains to be seen if Klout will continue to gain clout itself, but many web marketers are keeping an eye on this new player.
