Facebook Dominates the Social Media World When It Comes to Page Views

Posted on Jan 13, 2010

When it comes to monthly page views, Facebook dominates the social media realm.  According to Pingdom, a traffic and uptime firm, Facebook had about 260 billion page views in one month, which is 11 times greater than MySpace.  Facebook page views are also significantly higher than Twitter’s.

Facebook has grown exponentially over the last couple of years.  Just two years ago, Facebook was behind MySpace both nationally and globally.  Facebook used to be hard to search and a lot of information was carefully guarded.  However, there have been many changes since then within Facebook.

One of the possible explanations of Facebook’s growth has to do with it letting users create fan pages and reserve unique URLs.  Instead of using a string of numbers in the URL, the username appears.  As a result, URLs have become more search engine friendly, as users are able to incorporate their keywords into the Web address.

Another reason that page views have jumped within Facebook has to do with the fact that more people are sharing information with the public.  Social networkers have the option to make parts of their shared content public information.  This change in privacy policies does have some Facebook users concerned, but it has played a major factor in page views.
