Just last week, Google announced its location-based ad product for local businesses, which is tied to Google Places. According to Google, “Boost enables business owners to easily create online search ads from directly within their Google Places account.” Currently, it is only available in Houston, San Francisco and Chicago.
When someone searches for a local business, Boost ads will appear in the “sponsored links” section of Google.com and Google Maps. The ads are typically comprised of the business name, address and telephone number. Boost ads might also include the number of reviews the business has acquired and a link to the Google Places page.
One of the main advantages of Boost ads is that they seem to attract highly qualified prospects. These are people who are actively searching for information.
Many marketers are viewing the new Google product as an effort to compete with Facebook Places. According to Mashable.com, “these two companies are in a tight battle for ad dollars and Facebook has been able to gain a competitive advantage by delivering hyper-targeted, highly relevant ads based on user-supplied information.”
