The search engine giant has requested the help of business owners in boosting its network neutrality campaign. Google has made its request via Twitter, the Small Business Toolkit and several other places.
Network neutrality refers to the concept that people who create new services and content should not have to ask for permission from carriers or pay fees to be seen on the Internet. Are you wondering how this issue affects you? Keep reading and you will find out.
The Internet provides opportunities for both big and small companies to attract new clients and grow their businesses. It is a level playing field for everyone and has been that way since the beginning. According to Google, “a free and open Internet gives small businesses the opportunity to find customers affordably and efficiently, whether it’s a local plumber reaching a new client down the block, or a niche antique dealer connecting with a collector overseas.”
Currently, 99 percent of people in the United States get their Internet service from a small number of broadband carriers that have a monopoly in the industry. These same carriers are looking into creating a new system where they can choose to degrade access to competitors’ websites and give favorable treatment to corporate partners. This system would allow carriers to choose what you get to see online, as well as what your potential clients are able to view.
There are two things you can do to help, according to Google. You can sign up to join Google’s campaign and/or contact Congress to argue the importance of network neutrality.
