Google+ continues to add features each week to its website in an effort to increase user participation, entice new users, and compete against leading social networking platform Facebook. This week, Google+ unveiled a suggested followers list that allows users to browse popular Google+ profiles, including celebrities, online personalities, journalists, and bloggers.
The new feature, which is similar to the "Who to Follow" list on the micro-blogging site Twitter, gives new users the opportunity to browse users who write about their interests (such as entertainment, art, or technology) and to find the biggest voices on the internet, from celebrities like Paris Hilton and Ashton Kutcher to reporters like Arianna Huffington and MG Siegler.
While some are praising the new feature for helping users find information that interests them, others have criticism for the suggested followers list, saying that it creates a harmful gap between "famous" users and regular people and engenders a sense of competition regarding who has more followers.
A Google Vice President has addressed concerns and criticisms by explaining that the feature is in its nascent stages and will grow and improve in the future to include a more diverse roster of users and users who consistently update on Google+.
