As the world continues to talk about the viability of Google's new social network site Google+, the internet media giant has announced that it will officially shut down its first attempt at entering the social networking: Google Buzz.
One of Google's vice presidents commented that the company is shutting down Buzz and several other products and services in order to concentrate on their new social networking platform. However, he noted that some of the products, such as iGoogle, may be integrated into their new website. He also told reporters that, although Buzz will no longer allow new posts or new user information, old posts and profiles will remain available to the public.
Google Buzz was released in February of last year. While the initial reception was positive, the website never caught on, and use dropped to almost nothing in just months. In addition, Buzz was criticized for a number of problems with the site, most notably privacy issues.
Google stated that they are shutting down these projects and websites in an effort to put more energy and manpower into tools that they believe will be used in people's everyday lives. Many complained that Buzz did not offer anything new or unique to users, while others added that Buzz just seem to be one more social network that made life harder instead of easier. Some worry that Google+ suffers from some of the same issues.
Most of these products will shut down by the beginning of 2012.
