Google Social Search Sparks Controversy Involving Facebook

Posted on May 24, 2011

Google has taken a major step in its battle to rein the social networking world. According to the company website, Google Social Search will be available globally in 19 languages.

Google Social Search first came on the scene in 2009. It was designed to make online searches more personal. Through Social Search, when you type in a particular word or phrase, the search results will include pages your social media friends have created, as well as links they have shared.

The major step Google has taken to expand Social Search has not been met without controversy. Facebook supposedly hired a public relations firm to broadcast negative stories about Social Search to the media. According to Mashable.com, “Facebook claims that Google’s practices raise ‘serious privacy concerns.’” Apparently, Facebook wasn’t thrilled with the idea of Google using their data without permission.
