It's been only a week since Google announced their Facebook competitor Google+. The network is still available via invite only and is still considered to be in the testing phase. Some business owners received personal invites and used them to create pages for their business, similar to Facebook business pages (which have become powerful marketing tools for many companies). Google asked that people NOT do this and announced they will be actively searching for and banning those who do.
Why the enforcement on business pages? Social media sites thrive because they are open in nature and allow users to connect to people and businesses. Google does, however, have a good reason for this. They are currently working on a business platform that will allow businesses to create pages that integrate with their other business tools, like Google AdWords. While it makes sense to create better experiences for business on Google+, it is frustrating that they have rolled out a network that is clearly not ready to compete with Facebook. They are putting all the pieces in place, but they have already frustrated a number of users by limiting invites and stifling the business opportunity. That being said, Facebook has had their fair share of controversial changes and updates over the years, and we should expect the same from Google+.
