Google to Predict Your Searches

Posted on Sep 14, 2010

Last week, Google announced a new search engine enhancement – Google Instant.  According to the search engine giant, “we are pushing the limits of our technology and infrastructure to help you get better search results, faster.”

Google Instant will show search results as you click on the keyboard and will change as each letter is typed into the search box.  The whole idea is that it will speed up the time it takes to get results.  You are supposed to be able to quickly get to relevant content without having to finish typing your search term or even hitting the “search” button.

In a description of this new feature Google states that “people type slowly, but read quickly, typically taking 300 milliseconds between keystrokes, but only 30 milliseconds (a tenth of the time) to glance at another part of the page.”  That was part of the drive behind Google Instant.

Google Instant is expected to take off 2 to 5 seconds from the average time it takes to search and select a link.  According to Google, if everyone uses this new feature, it will save an estimated 3.5 billion seconds a day.

Google executives are claiming that Google Instant won’t largely impact advertisers who are paying to have their texts appear near search results.  However, there is skepticism regarding that claim.  Some marketers believe that Google Instant could affect the performance and cost of ads.
