Has Google Thrown in the Towel?

Posted on Jan 12, 2011

Some people have said that Facebook has already won the social media race and there is no chance that Google will ever be able to catch up.  Others aren’t quite so sure about the future of social media and Google’s role.

According to analyst Eugene Munster of Piper Jaffray, Google has surrendered the title of social media king to Facebook. Bloomberg TV recently interviewed Munster and some of the highlights of the discussion are below:

  • The social media battle has come to an end. According to Munster, Facebook has won, since it basically owns the social graph.
  • Google grew about 22 percent this year, while Facebook grew 100 percent.
  • Google will most likely focus on improving search versus trying to compete with Facebook.
  • Advertisers will probably start spending their dollars with Facebook, as Facebook and the social graph get better at predicting what users want.
  • The way people are buying things is changing, which is good news for Facebook.
