Next week, Facebook will announce a new incentive for small businesses to begin advertising on Facebook: as many as 200,000 businesses will receive $50 worth of advertising credits.
Why the huge new promotion? The chief operating officer of Facebook, Sheryl Sandberg, believes that businesses of all sizes and scopes can find new customers and clients on Facebook. Sandberg, who was instrumental in developing Google's wildly successful search advertising business, believes that only a fraction of the small businesses with Facebook accounts are currently taking full advantage of the social networking site.
What are the advantages of advertising on Facebook? Sandberg explained that businesses could save money and target the people who are most likely to want their services or product. For example, a local business could place ads that only people with certain zip codes could see, while another business could only target women, people in a certain age range, or people who have listed certain activities among their interests.
While most small businesses are happy utilizing their free page and stopping with that, Sandberg explained that there are low-cost options that could help businesses reach a new audience.
Ultimately, Sandberg hopes that businesses will claim their $50 advertising credits and try out the world of Facebook's targeted advertising.
