Study Shows that Social Media Boosts Email Campaigns

Posted on Jun 22, 2010

According to a new study by GetResponse, emails that include the option to share content on social media websites significantly increases the number of click-throughs.

GetResponse, an email marketing company, reviewed nearly 500 million emails sent by 19,149 of their customers that incorporated the option to share on Facebook, MySpace, Digg, LinkedIn or Twitter. The research team discovered that these emails created a 30 percent higher click-through rate than emails that didn’t have the social media sharing opportunity.  When there were three different sharing choices, the click-through rate was 55 percent higher, on average.

The study revealed that Twitter was the most popular social sharing option, as it accounted for 67.2 percent of all social emails. Facebook was just behind Twitter with 62.7 percent.

Even though these findings show the importance of using a social media option in emails, only 19 percent of email marketers provided the opportunity to share via Twitter (at least once). What was even worse is that a mere 13.5 percent included any type of social sharing option.  This information was especially surprising given that there has been a lot of data showing the relevance of social media in the marketplace.
