On October 21, 2009, announcements were made by Google and Microsoft Bing that deals had been made to index Twitter messages. This information was publicized during the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco, California.
The Bing Twitter site has already been launched by Microsoft, which now indexes tweets in real time. According to an October 21, 2009 post on Bing.com, “you can now search for what people are saying all over the web about breaking news topics, your favorite celebrity, hometown sports team, and anything else you use Twitter to stay on top of today.” It also mentions that Twitter is producing millions of tweets every minute on a range of topics.
Why did Microsoft decide to integrate Twitter into Bing’s search results? An article on eWEEK.com suggests that Microsoft is indexing tweets as one way to grow Bing’s market share. Industry experts have various opinions when it comes to whether or not more people will use Microsoft Bing for this reason. One expert mentioned that Twitter search will help add a small amount to Bing, but another industry specialist said that Twitter will help make Bing a better search engine. Only time will tell if Microsoft’s move will attract more people to Bing.
Google also has plans to incorporate Twitter content into search results within the next few months. It is even suspected that Yahoo! is developing a real time search with the startup, OneRiot.
