In a move that the social networking company hopes will please both businesses and users, Twitter has announced that it will be integrating more promoted tweets (paid advertisements) into user timelines. Currently, promoted tweets are only seen in user timelines if the user is already following the company.
While some users argue that the promoted tweets are simply a bothersome way for Twitter to become more profitable, the behemoth internet company argues that it has developed the new promoted tweets policy with the user in mind. They will not show a promoted tweet to any one user more than once, and they will only show promoted tweets to users who they truly believe will be interested in the information - based on who else the user follows, what the user retweets, and how they interact with others on Twitter.
Obviously, Twitter also hopes that businesses and companies who wish to advertise with more success on Twitter will be interested in purchasing these promoted tweets.
For now, Twitter is testing its new approach to promoted tweets on a very small percentage of accounts and with a small number of advertisers, including AMC Theaters, Pepsi, Disney, Best Western, American Express, Sephora, Lexus, Yahoo!, and Lionsgate. They hope that the new promoted tweets feature will expand to more users and more sponsors in the coming months.
