The race continues for the top Internet browser positions. While Microsoft’s Internet Explorer still ranks at the top with 62.69 percent of the market share, it no longer has the strong lead it once enjoyed. Web browsers, such as Mozilla’s Firefox, Apple’s Safari and Google’s Chrome, have become tough competitors. Within the last five years, Internet Explorer has lost almost a third of its market share.
Since its launch in 2009, Google’s Chrome has more than doubled its market share among Internet browsers, increasing its usage share last year more than any other Web browser. According to Net Applications, a California based Web metrics company, Chrome jumped from a market share of 1.54 percent in February 2009, to 4.63 percent in December 2009. The Web browser now ranks third, surpassing Apple’s Safari.
Vince Vizzaccaro, executive vice president of Net Applications, Google really amped up its marketing efforts at the end of 2009 and if it continues with its marketing efforts, it will probably take an even bigger share of the market in 2010. “Chrome showed up in ads on Google’s search page, which almost never happens. Google also announced the ongoing development of Chrome OS to up the battle with Microsoft and Apple.”
