A blog is the best friend that you can have when it comes to getting better search engine rankings. Search engines love fresh and relevant content, and a blog allows you to update your site on a daily basis if you so choose.
You might find it hard to believe, but some attorneys that choose to blog find themselves facing the dilemma of not knowing what to write about. It is a problem that faces anyone who has to write anything; the problem of staring at a blank page, watching the cursor blink over and over again and having no idea where to begin.
As injury attorneys there is no shortage of subjects for you to tackle, and in the hopes of inspiring some of you to get past the mental obstacles, here are a few of them.
Legal Glossary: As a personal injury attorney, you are quite used to terms like “subrogation,” “contributory negligence,” or any other number of situations that you have to deal with on behalf of your client. It might not be the worst thing in the world to describe to them in plain English what some of these terms actually mean. It would help potential clients have a better understanding of the process. Not to mention it could help build traffic onto your site. The odds are that someone looking for a definition of some legal term or another would get it from Wikipedia, but who knows. They might just get it from you.
Political Issues (Tort Reform): As many of you know, there is no single entity on earth that is better at convincing people to rid themselves of their rights than all the lobbyists and “reform” organizations that litter the political landscape. Since comparatively few of us actually get injured, many Americans have bought the myth that injury attorneys are simply “ambulance chasers” just looking to sue everyone. A blog is a perfect way for you to both set the record straight and to get your name out there as an attorney. And when you consider how prolific the tort reform organizations are in so many respects, there should be plenty of opportunities for you to explain exactly why that new ballot initiative proposed by the insurance companies isn’t necessarily a good thing, or to come to the defense of a “McDonald’s Coffee Lady” sort of case.
Legal Issues: Is there a case going on that has gained national or regional attention? Why not offer an opinion? Or if you don’t want to give an opinion on a case that doesn’t involve you, perhaps some “color commentary” might be in order. When the Supreme Court hands down their decisions, why not blog about what you think? Or blog about how those decisions could affect the rights of your clients or potential clients?
Successes: Have you recently won a sizeable judgment for your client or negotiated a decent settlement? Why not discuss it? It’s a great way to let potential clients know that you are capable.
Sign up for Alerts: It is pretty simple to sign up for Google News Alerts, who will keep an eye out for any headlines that feature the words that you specify. For instance, if you type in “tort reform” or “car accident Morristown” or basically anything that you can think of that is relevant to your practice, you will get a daily e-mail digest of news articles that feature the keywords you specified. This presents you with all sorts of material to write about, and the time spent hunting down story ideas is kept to a minimum.
For those of you who simply don’t have the time to big articles every month, blogging might be the answer. Just doing a few lines on something once or twice a week could make all the difference towards getting your site noticed.
