EzineArticles.com recently changed the standards regarding how many words can be included in an anchor text link. According to Chris Knight, the publisher behind the EzineArticles.com community & marketing system, expert authors have to now earn the right to link up 4-word and 5-word phrases by submitting high-quality articles that are at least 400 words.
An anchor text link is a word or phrase that links to another web page. In Knight’s blog post, “Anchor Text Rule Based on Word Count,” some authors “abuse this system by linking up extremely long key phrases – or worse yet, entire sentences.” Knight goes on to say that due to the large text links, articles end up looking similar to SPAM. The focus of these articles changes from providing helpful information to becoming a “vehicle for link space.”
Previously, there were only editorial guidelines when it came to anchor texts in articles submitted to EzineArticles.com, which suggested limiting anchor text links to only 3 words.
The new rule states that if the article is less than 400 words, each text link is only allowed to contain up to 3 words. If the article exceeds 400 words, each text link may have up to 5 words. Common words, such as is, to, in, it, on, of, and, by, at, a, an and others will not be included in the word count.
