It has been reported that Google, Intel and Sony are working together to create a Web content platform for your living room, which is called Google TV. Supposedly, Google TV would be a component of a Web-capable television or act as a set-top box. The platform would be based on Android, Google’s mobile operating system and would incorporate a version of Chrome, Google’s Web browser.
The Times has reported that Google TV would have similar applications as the smartphone and would make it simple to use the Internet on your television. In fact, it is believed to be as easy as changing the channel. According to the New York Times, there may be Google TV-related products as early as this summer.
Already, there are various set-top boxes available that can be utilized to stream online video from YouTube, browse the Internet and rent premium video content. To date, these set-top boxes haven’t grown in popularity to the point that they can be considered the preferred living room device. Many people are wondering if Google will be able to do better than its competitors in this market.
There have been many questions surrounding Google TV, including how advertising will work. According to the New York Times, one of the biggest motivations for Google in developing Google TV is to “ensure that its...search and advertising systems, play a central role.”
