This Black History Month, we're proud to spotlight Dr. Alvin Cowans, founder and owner of Optimum Podiatry, whose entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to excellence are reshaping the landscape of podiatric care.
Inspired by Family, Driven by Purpose
Dr. Cowans' journey into podiatry began with watching his mother receive treatment for foot problems. Those early experiences sparked an interest that would eventually lead him to medical school. However, unlike many of his peers who chose the security of joining established practices, Dr. Cowans had a bigger vision – creating his own practice that would serve as both a premier medical facility and a legacy for his young daughters.
"When I had my girls, I knew this was the best time to do it," Dr. Cowans explains. "They won't know anything else other than seeing mommy and daddy building this practice. I'm creating a legacy for them."
Breaking the Mold
In an industry where many new podiatrists opt for the security of joining established practices or hospitals, Dr. Cowans chose to blaze his own trail. Working alongside his wife Nikki, whose expertise in surgical practice management proved invaluable, he built Optimum Podiatry from the ground up.
"I wanted to be better and stay ahead of the game," says Dr. Cowans.
His innovative approach includes:
-
Pioneering minimally invasive surgical techniques
-
Developing specialized treatment programs for athletes
-
Creating accessible cash-pay options for patients
-
Implementing cutting-edge technologies and treatments
Exceeding Expectations
The results speak volumes about Dr. Cowans' vision and execution. Within just two years of opening, Optimum Podiatry has:
-
Surpassed their five-year growth projections three years ahead of schedule
-
Successfully implemented in-office surgical procedures
-
Expanded their cash-pay services to increase accessibility
-
Built a loyal patient base through exceptional care
-
Established themselves as a leading provider of minimally invasive surgical procedures
Mentorship and Community Impact
Dr. Cowans acknowledges the importance of mentorship in his success, crediting figures like Dr. Joel Foster and his residency director, Dr. Thomas Merrell. Now, he hopes to pay it forward by showing other aspiring Black medical professionals that entrepreneurship is within reach.
"Looking back, it's really not that hard," Dr. Cowans reflects. "It's just patience and using your time wisely to market, build relationships with primary care physicians, and establish yourself in the community."
Looking to the Future
With plans to expand into a larger facility with dedicated surgical space and a goal of building a million-dollar practice, Dr. Cowans continues to dream big. His success serves as an inspiration for the next generation of African American medical entrepreneurs.
"I want my daughters to have a business mindset from childhood through adulthood," he says. "I want to create that legacy of entrepreneurship they can learn from and implement in their own futures."
