Andrew Schneider, DPM, was a new physician. He was up to his neck in learning the ropes and running his new podiatry practice when a colleague asked him if he'd be interested in volunteering his services at a local charity clinic.
Andrew's initial reaction was, "I can't afford the time away from my clinic." This is when his colleague said something that Andrew never forgot: "Charity never costs anything."
A Turning Point
Andrew knew that this was the truth, and began volunteering one Wednesday per month at the San Jose Clinic in Houston. This was in his first years of practice, 13 years ago. Since then, Andrew has come to the clinic every single month, giving his time and medical care to those who can't afford regular medical care.
"I see a lot of kids who are in pain, unable to see a doctor because they've fallen between the cracks or aren't eligible for Medicaid because they aren't legal residents," said Dr. Schneider. "These children are in pain, and we help pick them up, help them run and play again."
Walking the Walk
And Dr. Schneider's help doesn't end when he leaves the free medical clinic. He often brings patients to his office gratis. He happily cares for their medical issues, knowing that he has the chance to help a diabetic keep a limb, return someone to the work force and alleviate their pain.
"I feel that health care shouldn't be denied to anyone," Dr. Schneider said. "So I help by walking the walk."
We want to thank Dr. Schneider for his commitment to serving his community in this way. Our team hopes that his story inspires others to give of their time, and that his colleague's words, uttered all those years ago speak to you: "Charity never costs anything."
