When Traci Scudder launched her solo practice, it wasn't merely about entrepreneurship—it was a strategic career move. "Starting my business had more to do with timing and where I was in my career at the time," Scudder explains. "I thought I could meet the needs of my clients better as a solo practitioner."
That decision proved successful for 15 years, allowing her to build a distinguished practice that recently experienced such significant growth that she made the calculated decision to return to law firm life where she could access expanded resources.
Making History in Southern Maryland
As a black attorney specializing in the niche areas of land use, zoning, and real estate development law, Scudder has left an indelible mark on the landscape of Southern Maryland. Her proudest achievement speaks volumes: "Handling three of the largest and most significant, transformative real estate development projects in Southern Maryland."
These landmark projects represent more than business success—they symbolize barriers broken and new standards set in an industry where Black professionals, particularly women, have historically been underrepresented.
Changing Landscapes
Scudder has witnessed encouraging shifts in her field. "I see more and more Black entrepreneurs entering the Commercial Real Estate and Development industry to capitalize on opportunities that directly benefit the communities in which they live, work and play," she notes.
This evolution reflects a growing recognition that development should serve the very communities where projects take root—a principle that has guided Scudder's approach to her legal practice.
A Vision for Greater Diversity
Looking toward the future, Scudder is clear about the changes she hopes to see: "I would love to see more black lawyers entering the CRE and real development space. Land use, zoning, and real estate development law are niche areas within the legal profession, and unfortunately, there is a lack of diversity among practitioners."
Her return to firm practice represents more than a personal career move—it positions her to potentially create pathways for others. With access to expanded resources, Scudder can continue shaping transformative projects while potentially mentoring the next generation of diverse legal talent.
Wisdom for the Journey
For aspiring Black lawyers, Scudder offers straightforward guidance: "Always work hard, be flexible, and help those in need whenever possible." She credits industry-related organizations and bar associations as valuable resources throughout her career journey.
Drawing inspiration from successful female attorneys in leadership roles, Scudder has herself become the kind of role model she once looked up to—a testament to the power of representation and the importance of visibility in specialized legal fields.
The Path Forward
As Scudder transitions to this new chapter at Rees Broome, PC, she carries with her a legacy of excellence, perseverance, and community impact. Her move to the firm represents both a personal achievement and a strategic positioning that will allow her to leverage additional resources and expertise. Her story illustrates how strategic vision, coupled with dedication to one's craft, can transform not just individual careers but entire communities through thoughtful development and legal expertise.
